Exactly What Is Plate (Float) Glass? - Atlas Glass Repair - A Philadelphia Glass Company

What is plate glass? And why is it referred to as "float glass?"
Plate glass is glass that is cast in a solid plate, most often through a roller process. The result is perfectly flat and virtually free of distortions. This type of glass is often used to make windows, and it is also utilized in the manufacture of mirrors, tables, and other objects that require flat glass. There are a variety of different thicknesses available, ranging from very thick - up to one inch - and highly durable plate glass with extremely compressive strength.
In making plate glass, molten glass is spread out on a metal table while it is still extremely hot, and then rollers pass over the table to smooth and polish it as it cools, creating the desired flat surface area. Depending on the manufacturing method, the glass may need to be polished again once it has cooled. This type of glass is also produced through a floating process, using a bath of molten tin to float the liquid glass as it cools and sets.
Atlas Glass Repair Company stocks many sizes and thickness of plate glass (we refer to it in the business as float glass). From massive 96" x 130" sheets, all the way down to 48" x 84" sheets. Any type of plate glass repair you need we can provide in a timely manner at a reasonable price.
