Trading Places (1983) Filming Locations: Then And Now

Trading Places Filming Locations: Then and NowTrading Places (1983) Filming Locations: Then And Now

Released: 1983
Directed By: John Landis

Trading Places is almost an iconic movie for Philadelphia as is Rocky (1976). According to the New York Times it is one of the best movie ever about Wall Street. According to the average Philadelphian, it is certainly one of the best movies ever filmed here. It is a personal favorite of the Glass Dude and his co-workers and to this day still gets a lot of play on the dusty, old VCR at the glass company in Philadelphia we work at.

The timelessness of the film is still underscored by the stark disparity between the rich and powerful in today's Philadelphia and the poor and underprivileged (No political commentary intended, lol).

It is, however, fun to see how similar or dissimilar 1983 Philadelphia is to today's Philadelphia. With that said here are screenshots from the actual movie posted next to the same locations today...

Useless Trivia: The music that accompanies the opening montage of classic Philadelphia screenshots is Mozart from the marriage of Figaro; The Westin Hotel in center city Philadelphia has a restaurant named Winthorpe & Valentine after the main characters in the movie; This was only Eddie Murphy's 2nd film (48 Hrs. being the first);

Atlas Glass Company in Philadelphia specializes in replacing large commercial plate glass and insulated units (double pane windows). In fact, we take pride in completing commercial glass repair that are beyond the scope of what most glass companies in Philadelphia can perform.

Below are pictures from a commercial glass repair in Philadelphia we performed recently on the 1700 block of Walnut Street in center city. The job entailed installing a particularly large (eighty inch by eighty inch) and heavy insulated unit (double pane) some thirty feet in the air. As you can see from the picture it took eight men just to lift the glass from the truck to the scissor lift. This job had to be performed at 6am to minimize the foot traffic in what is usually a congested area. The customer informed us that three other Philadelphia glass companies had passed on the job. He was very satisfied with the finished job that Atlas Glass Company in Philadelphia performed.

"I gave him the whole nine-yards!" - Ten Of The Best Quotes From World War II

The fellas at Atlas Glass Repair Company are huge World War II buffs, not to mention big supporters of all U.S. Veterans. The following list is a collection of just some of the great quotes from World War II.

Ten of the best Quotes from World War II:

"... I Shall Return." - General Douglas MacArthur - 1942

"Nuts!" - General McAuliffe (his single word reply to the German Command when asked to surrender during the Battle Of The Bulge - December 22, 1944

"Scratch one flattop." - Lt. Commander E. Dixon - The Battle of Coral Sea - May, 1942

"God-Damit! You'll never get the purple heart hiding in a foxhole! Follow me!" - Captain Henry P. Crowe (Guadalcanel 1943)

"When this war is over, the Japanese language will only be spoken in hell!" - Admiral William F. Halsey, December 7th, 1941

"This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." - Winston Churchill - After the Second Battle of El Alamein - 1942

"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us and behind us... they can't get away this time." - General Lewis Puller (surrounded by eight enemy divisions at the Battle Of The Bulge - December 1944)

"Don't tell them anything. When it's over tell them who won." Fleet Admiral Earnest King (when asked about his tight-lipped wartime public relations policies) 1942

"You don't go into battle to die for your country. You go into battle to make the other bastard die for his county." - General George S. Patton Jr. (speaking to troops in 1941)

"I gave him the whole nine yards!" - Unknown P-51 pilot, referring to the plane's 27-foot ammo belt - Pacific Theater 1943

We at Atlas Glass Company in Philadelphia would like to take the time here to give a shout out to the single most decorated solder who served in World War II - Audie Murphy (June 1925 - May 1971). Murphy served in the United States Army in the 15th and 3rd infantry unit was the epitomy of courage under fire. He received not only the Congressional Medal Of Honor, but the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star (twice), the Bronze Star (twice), the French Legion Of Merit, the Purple Heart (three times) and many more. He once held off a German Company of solders single-handedly for more than an hour, allowing his unit to safely fall back. We salute you, Mr. Murphy!
